I have to say, I generally don't care for the flute. I do, however, enjoy the wood flute sound of Yusef Lateef, as on The Gentle Giant.
But overall, with all seriousness, the flutist I most often want to hear is Ian Anderson (though I haven't actually been in a Tull mood in many a month).

Dolphy.
I also am attracted to very few flute sounds. Generally jazz flutists put me in mind of the Herbie Mann-esque flute player in the S.F. coffeehouse scene in Bullitt. But that's just me.
Newton has awesome chops, little emotional engagement, for me. I really dig his work on the Mystery School date with John Carter, et al.
Some Sam Rivers.
And some Newton, on I've Known Rivers, with the what-ever- happened-to -cellist-Abdul Wadud.

Interesting. I mean, I figured that there was a legit source for that pronunciation. I just always found it odd and annoying that even when some people refer to it as a flute, they in turn refer to the player as a flautist.
I mentioned this before, but watch out for a young kid in NYC named Gamiel Lyons. Great fleutist, excellent flahutist, phenomenal flutist. Not sure how he plays the flaut.

For me ... Eric Dolphy.
It's both interesting and sad to see that several posters have less than enthusiastic comments and experiences with jazz flute players. It's a very difficult instrument, and Herbie Mann probably did more and less for it than anyone I can think of.
Frank Wess had some amazing flute chops.
I had the great pleasure of hearing what Jim Pepper did on flute, in-person. Astounding.
Also, a phenomenal young lady I had the great pleasure to perform with for quite some time in a group in Alaska known as Northern Journey ... Louise Pigeon. What an extraordinary, soulful talent. Great singer, too!

Well, there is many people who double on flutes (Dolphy included) and few who play the flute as their main instrument (for example Herbie Mann, James Newton, Robert Dick, Carlos Bechegas...). Which do you mean? Also, some don't play the classical flute, but play shakuhachi (Ned Rothenberg) or other exotic flutes...
My choice will be Don Cherry, by the way
And there is a guy that I've never heard but would like to, one Jim Danley...

Recently, the only flute player I have gone out of my way to listen to is Nicole Mitchell from Chicago, but James Newton may be my favorite.

Also not a huge flute fan; I don't think recordings capture the sound very well, and my cheap stereo probably doesn't help,
- but, it's hard to argue with Dolphy (I'd pick Jeremy Steig for sound/tone alone, but most of his recordings are less than stellar).
- & , I'll cheat:
best fue (with squiggle over the 'e' - Japanese wood flute) - Russell Baba (fueist? fuetist?)

My reasons might surprise some, but my favorite flute player is Herbie Mann. And I'd be the first to admit that I don't think he is the best flute player I've ever heard, but I just dig his best albums and play them all the time. A lot of dross among the pearls, but his best albums are just great to my ears. Lots of variety, some really progressive stuff on the ones where Sonny Sharrock plays, some contain Roy Ayers's best vibes playing, and some pretty daring concepts like the Wailing Dervishes.

I feel the same way about Herbert Laws.
Excellent musician...I just never much cared for the charts he played.
