I came inches away from playing a gig with Milt Jackson in the 70's. Damn!

With Jackie Mclean's sessions....and with Harold Land...both were great bands.

Bobby Hutcherson is my favorite, simply for the variety of settings in which he has played. Had Walt Dickerson recorded more frequently and in more varied settings, he would have given Hutch a run for his money.

Let's not forget Steve Nelson, certainly high on any scale....this is not a *vote* simply a 'mention' of another great player who hadn't been named to this point.

I heard Bill with his own quartet around 1980 when he was on break with Jackie and Roy. Vibes, bass, drums, and cello. Last I heard he got into teaching as a full-time profession.

I don't have a fave vibist, but rather go in cycles with different people for a year at a time. So for the last year, my main man has been Bill Ware. Not so much because of what he does as a player, but more because he is playing vibes in a context one normally does not hear vibes used the way he uses the instrument with the Jazz Passengers, and his own trio called Vibes. I'm not that big on the Groove Collective, of which he is a member, but I do respect what they do.

He also plays vibes sitting on a bar stool - pretty cool.

I'd be tempted to say Gentle Giant's Kerry Minnear, but in the spirit of the thread, and the area of JC in which it is located, I'll go with Hutch and Nelson, in that order.

I like Milt Jackson but it's just not the kind of thing I want to listen all the time.

And Alan Dawson could play that thing, too!

Hmm... for some reason, I don't see the appeal in Bobby Hutcherson. He seems to be the popular vote in this thread, but for some reason he never got me going at all. Maybe it's cause I never saw him live or anything like that. I just don't hear much emotion in his playing I guess...

Steve Nelson is fabulous. I love Joe Locke too and...drumultima YOU MUST SEE Bobby Hutcherson if you EVER have the chance!!!!!! You must. It will change your mind (and maybe your life). Also, Bobby is very approachable and he's be happy to talk to a young musician!

YES!

I wish they recorded more more together. I think Hutch could play in just about any context, but his playing was quite interesting with Archie Shepp.
