It's SO hard to pick just one. I guess today I'll have to go with Jeb Bishop.

Pete...There is a great track on Joe Turner's Atlantic LP..."Boss of the Blues"...I think "Morning Glory"?...anyway LB takes a solo with Joe Turner then shouting, ..."he's a cool one, he's a real cool one"!

A joy!

Good point.

I've attempted [and without much success] to play both instruments and the valve t-bone has many subtle differences compared to a slide tromebone...er, not the least of which is how the sound is produced. Being a trumpeter, the valve trombone was, for me, easier to learn, IMHO.

OK, then.

Valve trombone: Bob Brookmeyer

Slide: JJ Johnson [with Steve Turre as a very close second]

Goodspeak...I had a friend from when I was about 10 years old...Nick Evans...who went on to play trombone with John Surman, Evan Parker, Dudu, Brotherhood of Breath etc.etc. , all the UK/EU free jazz scene etc. Anyway, I was learning alto and he was trying to play traditional jazz on trombone (slide) at the same time ...and I got some Gerry Mulligan Qrt EPs (yes, that long ago! from France)...with Bob Brookmeyer...and he tried to play along with them...hopeless. So, I tried ...and I can't even get a note out of a trumpet...and thought...Christ, Trombone, forget it! Slide lengths! So, I have enormous admiration for anyone that even attempts to play the thing (in whatever form)...Regards!

RC.
Aggh...Late call...Anyone mentioned Jimmy Knepper?

I know it's not a new day, but I was just listening to some Carla Bley, so Gary Valente has taken over for the moment.

Thanks, RC.

Trumpet is my instrument.

Trombone is my envy.

So do I.

In fact I listened to his Okeh/Brunswick recordings for several hours yesterday. I enjoy his trombone playing, but it is nothing like Brown's in terms of dropping my jaw and transporting me out of this world.

I can easily get all preacher-ish about LB but it's too cold for that shit.
