Hey, BFrank!

Is that Jack Bruce by any chance?

I saw him in 1972 as a member of West, Bruce and Lang.

Excellent bassist, IMHO.

Stanley Clarke was the first electric bassist I got into, Plus he doubled on acoustic which I thought was cool at the time (the '70s). And he introduced me to Jeff Beck who I hadn't heard of at the time.

Non-jazz, it has to be Paul MCCartney though Carol Kaye, James Jamerson, Jack Bruce and Larry Graham are close runners up. Stevie Wonder's synth basslines were quite amazing inventions as well.

In jazz, it's Jaco. Lots of other players have more impressive chops today, but I just don't hear his kind of creativity on the instrument anymore. Victor Wooten (among others) has showed us that there is still a lot to discover on the instrument--but no one has added it all up for me so far.

Absolutely!

I saw W,B & L once, too........perhaps it was '72 also!

FWIW, I have a lot of his solo albums and most are at least interesting if not good ("Harmony Row" is a GREAT album). He has a unique songwriting style. Couple that with his bass-playing and choice of side musicians and there's bound to be some good music there.

Stanley Clarke is an emotional pick, just cuz RTF was my gateway from prog rock to jazz. He admits he copped stuff from Larry Graham, but his dexterity and yes, his classical training and bowed work on acoustic make him a tough contender.

But Jaco was the most musically inventive electric bassist ever IMO, so intellectually I'm going with him.

Also, while Rob Wasserman is not always jazz and he's not really in the same league with some of the other folks mentioned, I quite like his Solos/Duets/Trios trilogy.

Whatever happened to Jeff Berlin?

Les Claypool deserves a mention amongst these greats, imo. The intro to "Fish On" alone is proof positive.
