I'm just waiting for "game, set in match".

Sympathy for the 'Speakster: If y'all look up "depreciating," you'll see that GoodSpeak used it in an acceptable way. The only problem is that "self-deprecating" is a much more common term than the one he used.

Damn. I'll never find the image I posted in which a picture of Mick actually singing that song has his head replaced by GoodSpeak's.

More common and simpler, since you don't have to calculate compound interest, much less fluctuating values vis-a-vis the Euro.

I'm all for sympathy, though. In principle.

Goodspeak is the greatest human being alive. He's so far ahead of the curve that all us rubes just don't get his brilliance. In 500 years archeologists will find this BBS, and then they will place the Goodster among the pantheon of great philosophers, which is where he clearly belongs.

Seriously, though . . .

depreciate
TRANSITIVE VERB:
1. To lessen the price or value of. 2. To think or speak of as being of little worth; belittle. See synonyms at decry. See Usage Note at deprecate.
INTRANSITIVE VERB:
To diminish in price or value.
deprecate
TRANSITIVE VERB:1. To express disapproval of; deplore. 2. To belittle; depreciate.

USAGE NOTE:The first and fully accepted meaning of deprecate is “to express disapproval of.” But the word has steadily encroached on the meaning of depreciate. It is now used, almost to the exclusion of depreciate, in the sense “to belittle or mildly disparage,” as in He deprecated his own contribution. In an earlier survey, this newer sense was approved by a majority of the Usage Panel.

bluenoter, you really are anal.

but don't stop. I have become fond of crosswords lately and that knowledge might just come in handy some day, due to some sadistic puzzle-maker.

Not to mention determine whether to use MACRS, ACRS, declining balance, or straight-line method.
