Warning: Worst Day Of Year Around Corner.
The most miserable day of the most depressing month of the year is just a week away, according to research.
Psychologist Dr Cliff Arnalls has come up with a formula pinpointing Monday, January 24 as the gloomiest day of all.The Cardiff University expert weighed up the influence of a number of January-specific phenomena that ruin our mood.
He blamed miserable weather, mounting debt, the length of time since Christmas and failed New Year's resolutions for the depressing day.
The factors are compounded by a lack of motivation in the face of a need to take action.
For those wishing to examine their woe further, the formula is [W+(D-d)]xTQ MxNA.
It translates as weather (W), debt (D) (minus the amount of money to be paid on your next pay day) and the time (T) since Christmas.
Then there is the period since the failure to quit (Q) a bad habit along with general motivational (M) levels and the need to take action (NA) to plan something to look forward to.
Fucking hell, i'm going back to bed!.......

Myself ( and significant numbers of others... obviously ) think this math is possibly late by four days...
I plan on ignoring the coronation of King DUBBya the pugnacious by watching Ali G reruns on on demand on cable ..

If I'm reading this equation right, on the day there is only one variable that you can control - M.
Derek is right - get back to bed. Just be as demotivated as possible to make sure that M is negative (but not if you are not in debt, mind) and then it won't be that bad after all. In fact it will be positively radiant, so take someone with you.
Until then, I'm with Dennis' advice.

The 24th must have hit Boston a couple of days early: today, it's stopped snowing, and there's not a cloud in the sky right now. Plus, I had the foresight to shovel out yesterday, so this morning I am sitting in a pocket of sun in the front room with my coffee, watching everyone else on the block dig out their parked (and snowbound) cars.
Not my street, but elsewhere in Somerville, same general effect:
The Trickettes are both out of school for the day (Snow Day!) and are providing today's only downside - they've been destroying the house since they woke up this morning.

Then again, maybe the 24th is coming a day late to Boston. School's out again tomorrow.
The local DPW apparently had the day off, or it sure looks like it after driving halfway across town for a play date for the Trickettes. Maybe they're all still passed out from last night's football game and related festivities, since I haven't seen a plow out since mid-afternoon yesterday. They've done this before, thinking they can stop plowing once the snow stops. Wrong answer.

Well, it's now over for us so I'm going to bed.
Just a thought. The guy that made this calculation did it based on Universal Time, so does that mean it's over for all of you, or do you have to suffer on for another eighth of a day (NY)/ three eighths of a day (Hawaii)?

Gonna keep suffering here. School is cancelled again tomorrow.
We've had two wondeful sunny days for the DPW workers to work on their tans, apparently. WTF?

I spent the weekend cooped up in an apartment with no carpet, no dry wall, two de-humidifiers running day and night, eating frozen foods and sandwiches and drinking cheap generic soda. Not only was my only lamp in storage but the flourescent lights in my kitchen area went dim, so I couldn't even read much.
On the other hand, I had cable and high-speed internet, so it was great!

At least your kids are out of the house, Walt. Somerville schools closed today and tomorrow. At least the little one (always on the move and looking for something different to do) has been able to shove off to her preschool, they've been available since Tuesday.
I'm sure I'll find my "personal space" sometime towards the end of next week.
Sheesh.

They closed here today too. Apparently, they have some kind of a spinner in the superintendant's office. It said "School" Wednesday (the worst of the three days) and "No School" the two beautiful days this week. Tomorrow, they're probably toying with the idea of a 3.5 hour delay and early dismissal.

If they coulda told me on Monday the kids would be outta school for the entire week, we would have hit the road. Instead, this day-by-day notification has driven half of the parents in town up the wall.
Walto's got the weather report right though - it stopped snowing about the time the football games started on Sunday. Monday - sunny. Tuesday - sunny. Wednesday - eight more inches. Today - sunny. Tomorrow - looks like more sun. Absolutely beautiful weather.
Monday should have been off, Wednesday probably could have been off too but most schools figured they dug out after two and a half days of boffo weather and were going to open. Not this burg. Even funnier was the quote from the local super in the local rag today, saying he was under fire for not calling off school during a couple flurries outbreaks earlier this winter. Sheesh and double sheesh.
- -
I suppose it could be worse - we could be back in Michigan and have four and a half months of overcast weather. Yucka.
