Kenny G. on the The Tonight Show

Did anyone catch Kenny G. on the Leno show? He did a duet with Earth, Wind and Fire!

It was kind of creepy.

No, and damn am I glad!

I dig EW&F, but can't stand the other two in this picture. Even EW&F are (sadly) becoming caricatures, I'm afraid.

Uggh.

If it's the same track he played with Earth, Wind and Fire on ABC-TV's New Year's Eve telecast, that was his scintillating version of OutKast's "The Way You Move." It's from his latest release, At Last…The Duets Album.

Incidentally, the review of that album at Amazon.com will make you spew milk out of your nose…even if you're not drinking milk! And manages to get the credit for "The Way You Move" wrong, to boot! A choice sample: "This, of course, is to say nothing of the sensuality brought to these collaborations by the goldilocked sax man himself. As with all Kenny G projects, the music is smoother than a frappuccino and oddly suited to a soap opera living room set; its swirls, swells, and crescendos seem meant to fall on bejeweled ears in pretty, carefully appointed spaces only."

But why were we talking about this, anyway?

Somebody needs to draw the sucker into a live, televised old-fashioned cutting contest.

As I have said in the BSS thread, I get to "watch" this performance tonight. What a way to end my three years in NBC land.

Kenny G with Earth, Wind, and Fire? A sure sign of the end of civilization as we know it. Soon, cats will be routinely fornicating with dogs, the theory of evolution will not be taught in schools, a half man/half woman/ half white/half black humanoid will be piddling with pre-teens in Neverland, and a mouth-breathing room-temperature IQ dildo will be the leader of the free world, just as Nostradamus and Gary Coleman predicted.

For a moment I couldn't work out what all the fuss here was about until I realised that I'd misread the thread title and that it actually said Kenny not Ali.

A big part of EWF's problem these days is that Maurice White is out of the picture, suffering I believe from Parkinson's. He brought a lot of experience, talent, and jazz sensibility to the group. Now it's probably mainly his flashy brother, the poppy Philip Bailey, and an assortment of young players carrying on the name.

Leno introduced Gorelick by saying that he is the best selling instumentalist
of all time.... 70 million p.o.s.! Gorelick's shameless, tasteless, "duo" with Louis
Armstrong sealed his bottom-feeding status, no?

I caught part of it while channel surfing last night, Baily, Verdine White, and one other cat (I want to say Larry Dunn, but I'm not sure, one of the original percussionists) were recognizable.

Who watches Leno and why do you care if Kenny G was on? Why would you even watch this? As for Kenny G ruining the Armstrong song, not possible. What A Wonderful World is not a very good song and it certainly isn't jazz. You all act like that song is the Mona Lisa instead of an Alfred E. Newman portrait. I dunno, Kenny G's music is a snore and I'm not sure how many different ways there are to say this.

I think, in the case of "smooth jazz", it would be a folding contest......

Because we're erudite, sophisticated, hip and curious, of course. Oh, and somewhat judgemental, too.

Who suggested anything of the kind? I've seen no reference to Louis or What A Wonderful World in this thread. I must have missed something along the way.

Ron--

See #13. Kenny G infamously recorded himself "accompanying" the long-departed Louis Armstrong on that song, which caused Pat Metheny and others to
rip Kenny a new one in print.

My oversight re: post #13. Sorry.

Don't dig Leno.

Don't dig Gorelick.

Don't see a problem with discussing it.

Over and out.
