Aw shit, do I have the wrong dude?
Isn't Nagurski the one with the pinky finger that looks like a hammer? You know, it's pointing west when the other fingers are pointing north?

You didn't say "greatest player." (Humor me. I don't know football.)
Oh. We're talking names. Fortunately, he still qualifies.

I have always loved Tittle's name - and a big plus was that he was known for throwing the bomb to Del Shofner. Not only are they both great names, but it sounds like they should be the stars of the Yeshiva football team.
However, as an adolescent, I really developed a love for the name Cosmo Iaccavazzi (a great Ivy League running back and, I believe, great guy)

Named after large political subdivisions: Joe Montana, Larry Canada (Broncos RB in 70's), David Boston.

He was a pretty good end for Detroit in the 50s.
My favorite football name is Visco Grgich, a tackle for the 49ers in the same era.

Not to be outdone by fellow Samoan Manu Tuiasosopo.

Thelillypaddude,
Cosmo went to Princeton, had an outstanding collegiate career, played only a handful of games in the NFL, NY Jets, I think. One of the greatest "names" in sports as you so astutely implied. Likewise for Carl "Spider" Lockhart.
