Two things that may help:
First, there's a place in XP which turns off/on "windows updates". Look for that switch and turn it off.

There's a major update to XP called "Service Pack 2". My guess is that that's what's attempting to download. I'm no expert, but SP2 is an upgrade that can be troublesome for one reason and another. David Pogue wrote a helpful piece about it in the cirquits section of the New York Times.

get linux.

Otherwise, do the aforementioned turning off of windows update, then physically disconnect your modem cable with the PC switched off, switch the PC on with the 'net disconnected, then off again, reconnect and on. That ought to sort it.

Service Pack 2 is excellent and essential for security reasons. You should be able to get it complete on a disk and install it in one. I got mine included with a disk in a PC mag. If you don't install SP2 you are wide open to all sorts of nasties.

Review of SP2
