Young Jazz Musicians needed in southern California

Musicians Workshop Advanced Jazz Band is looking for a few hot players. If you are between the ages of 11 and 19 and have ambitions of greatness in the music business, here is your chance to shine. The jazz band heats it up every Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Musicians Workshop building in Old Town Temecula, playing professional-level charts written by some of the best in the business, including Tony Benade and Les Brown. “This is a performance-oriented approach toward learning and teaching music, and to that end, the jazz band performs regularly throughout the community and Southern California,” said program director Jon Laskin.

“One of the most important aspects of Musicians Workshop is our professional Artist in Residence program.” Jazz band organizers are seeking a bari sax, some altos and another great “bone player,” Laskin said. Recently, the band paired up with several alumni players who worked with the group during a packed performance at the Anaheim Convention Center for the 2005 NAMM show. The National Association of Music Merchants is one of the largest music industry trade shows in the world. Throughout the performance, a barrage of famous people showed up, including arranger/pianist Paul Schiefer, Stevie Wonder, and Carlos Santana. After the show, students were able to mix and mingle with the celebrities, offering incredible once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities with the stars. For those not yet ready for the Advanced Jazz Band, Musicians Workshop also offers beginning strings, Youth Orchestra, chorus, musical theatre, and more.

Costs for the program include a once-a-year family membership fee of $25 plus a $115 program tuition. Scholarships are available for needing and deserving students. For more information on the Jazz Band or other Musicians Workshop programs, call (951) 678-2517 or visit www.musiciansworkshop.org.
