Our own Lynn Bush is performing on Friday. Unfortunately, I don't get to town until late that night.

The Saturday schedule is an embarrassment of riches:

Solomon Burke, Hassan Hakmoun, Blind Boys of Alabama, Julian Priester, Chico Hamilton, Ruth Brown, Shemekia Copeland, and Bonnie Raitt, to name a few. The other days are much thinner on the ground--rather disappointingly so.

So who's coming, and on which days? I'll definitely be there all day Saturday, probably Monday, and Sunday a ? as of now.

Oh, my! That Saturday lineup is amazing indeed, Pete. Too bad Lynn is playing so early on Friday, as I'm negotiating ways to get off work Saturday, but Friday too would be a stretch. We should be able to check it out Sunday p.m. and (maybe) Monday too. See you there.

How about this, Mark--we don't let the Seattle Mark Taylor play Barbes in Brooklyn until you play Bumbershoot?

These days Bumbershoot programs very few non-local jazz acts. Earshot would be more like it.

I may be there. Would be great to meet. Just a cautionary note: It gets quite crazy. I find that planning to see 2-3 gigs a day for sure and everything else is gravy kind of approach works for me the best. I used to try and run and catch everything, but the line-ups are ridiculous at times, plus I get claustraphobic around so many damn people. It's advisable to take sanity breaks of libation.

Cem, if you make it, I'd love to hook up. Saturday will be crazy because I'll be with some Bay Area friends, and there's so much going on that day. But Sunday & Monday I plan to get there at 3 or 4, and there's much less of a "must" nature those days.

Cem, though I don't think Bill can make it on Sunday, a late dinner, maybe with Joe Xmas, would be great. On Saturday I'll be with my Bay Area friends all day, so I can't make any extra-Bumbershoot plans.

I know that Friday is a tough day. I'm just happy to be there since this is my first year to be invited as a performer. This is the first year I submitted and hit the deadline so I'm 1 for 1. Maybe next year I'll get a better slot.

Would love to catch up for a hang while everybody is in town.

I can't do any kind of post-Bumbershoot thing on Saturday or Sunday. I'll only be around for a short while on Sunday, maybe 3-7. The only thing I plan to see for sure is Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. I wonder if there's any place we can hook up at Bumbershoot, maybe from 6-7ish on Sunday.

Seattle may have to be later...or not...? So, let Pete be hub-meister and us little spokes will connect through him. Seattle Sunshine Breaking Weather Records

SEATTLE - Don't let it get around, but Perry Como was right about Seattle - at least in summertime - when he sang that "the bluest skies you've ever seen" are here.

Despite the region's deserved reputation for dark, rainy and seemingly endless winters, summers tend to be sunny and dry.

And this one has been a doozy. Seattle set a modern record at 12:07 p.m. Tuesday when the thermometer at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport hit 70 degrees, marking the 50th consecutive day with a high temperature of at least 70. The previous record was established in 1958.

The sunny stretch is expected to last well into September, said meteorologist Jeff Rood with the National Weather Service.

"We'll shatter the record," Rood said.

Wednesday's high was expected to be in the mid-70s. The forecast called for gradually climbing temperatures over the Labor Day weekend, in time for the 33rd annual four-day Bumbershoot Arts Festival, named for an umbrella in a wistful bid at reverse psychology for the weather gods.

"I've lived in Seattle all my life and I don't remember a summer like this," said attorney Brad Mehtala, 43. "When I was in high school, I remember literally counting nice days. There'd be like 12 or 15 in a row, and then the clouds would move in."

Long stretches of warm temperatures are more common south of Seattle, where some Washington communities get 80 days of temperatures 70 or higher, Rood said.

Of course the sunny days here are nothing compared to the recent searing and sometimes deadly highs in the Southwest, the Midwest and even Europe.

Rood said he's learned not to call sunny weather "beautiful."

"Some people complain if we call it beautiful when it's sunny and 75," he said. "Some people think cloudy and cool is beautiful."

Dry-waller David Benson, 53, prefers the cooler weather of spring and fall. "I like the sun but I don't care that much for the heat," he said.

Teacher Lynn Black, 63, grew up in Hawaii and is still getting used to bundling up her grandchildren for June trips to the beach.

But when summer finally arrives, "it's glorious," she said. "This summer especially."

President Bush noted the sunshine during his visit here last week, prompting a collective "Shhhhhhhhhhh!" among those who hope to rein in Northwest population growth.

"It's a tragedy," said author Bill Dietrich of the bright, sunny weather.

"We just got the economy so bad that it'll keep people away and now you're broadcasting this word of good weather," said Dietrich, who writes books - fiction and nonfiction - about the region. "They might all start coming again."

Yes, Saturday only as it looks right now. Sounds like a plan... We'll definitely be at the Chico Hamilton and Hassan Hakmoun shows. In between? Who knows... Just look for a somewhat furry guy playing somebody else's drums in the continuous drum circle thang. Too bad Cem can't make it this year. Hey, Lynn, are you going to be around on Saturday? Would love to hook up with you too.

Chico was thoroughly entertaining. Nice set. After hearing a number of negative opinions about his current band, it was a pleasant surprise. He's the living master of the sock cymbal - post-Jo Jones - and not too shabby on the mallets either at 80-plus. Hassan Hakmoun was amazing too. Sorry Bonny and I missed you there, Pete! Way too many Phishhead flailers who confused dance music with trance music to search out familiar faces...

Sorry I missed you Bill. The other times I've seen Hakmoun there was more variety to the performance--though we only stayed for the first half hour or so, then went to the stadium. Unfortunately missed Ruth Brown, but Howard Tate was spectacular, as were Solomon Burke & the Blind Boys earlier in the day.

Hi Guys. Sorry to miss you this year.

My set went really well gaging from audience response. It was hot though. 2pm in full on sun for the audience. Felt like it was in the 90's. I hung around a little while Friday afternoon while it was free for me. I listened to some of the Jessica Lurie Ensemble. I don't know who she is recorded on but her music was really interesting. I think you all might enjoy her thing.

I'll shoot for a better slot next year. I'm going to get started on it now. :-)
