The History of Jazz by Ted Gioia

I'm somewhat of a newbie to the Jazz scene so I bought Gioia's History of Jazz through Amazon.com. I gave it a cusory once-over at Barnes&Noble and thought it read commenably. That assessment square with you more knowledgable afficionados?

Well, I don't know about my qualifications as a "knowledgable afficionado." But I consider Gioia's History of Jazz book to be excellent. He covers a lot of territory in a rather small book in a very intelligent manner. I recommend it.
