SinginSumo Memorial - CD Drive

Sorry that it's taken so long to establish a new thread where we can actually begin to contribute in a meaningful way to a memorial to our dear friend, Dobie.

If you're not familiar with this project, here's a link which will provide the necessary background.

We're soliciting new and gently-used jazz CDs (all styles) to create a permanent jazz collection in honor of Dobie Losben at the University of Alaska Anchorage/Alaska Pacific University Consortium Library.

Please send your jazz CDs to:

UAA Consortium Library
Jazz Collection
3211 Providence Drive
Anchorage, Alaska 99508-4614

If possible, please copy and paste the above address and print it out for your mailing label. Otherwise, please be certain to include the words JAZZ COLLECTION and LIBRARY within your address, so that your contributions will be properly handled.

To see which CDs have already been pledged, click here. This list will be updated regularly.

I plan to document the entire process of creating the Dobie Losben Jazz Collection via digital photographs, which I'll share with Jazz Corner posters on an ongoing basis.

Note: Please indicate which CDs you are sending (in a post on this thread) so that we can maintain a record of contributions while (hopefully) avoiding too many duplications.

Important: Please provide an accurate artist and album title entry so that we may properly enter and track these contributions without having to do unnecessary research.

Wow! Thanks, both of you! (I guess we can all thank each other.)

I'll certainly be donating something (G-d willing), but I'm not ready to specify anything yet.

Thanks a million, Steve and Rita!

Dobie would be humbled and mystified by all of this, I'm sure.

This is only the beginning, but it's a great and sincere one.

Ron,
Dobie sure had the best friends around.

I'll be glad to send two of my all-time favorites in memory of a man I wish I had known better (even through pixel exchange):
- Thelonious Monk : Monk Alone, Complete Columbia Solo Studio Recordings (1962-1968)
- John Coltrane : Ballads

Here's a nice view of the east exterior wall of the new UAA/APU Consortium Library where the new jazz collection will be housed in Dobie's honor.

That's not an optical illusion. The walls do lean outward, an architectural detail to reduce glare from the glass. You can walk right up to the edge inside, which is a bit spooky when you're on the 3rd floor. This east wall faces a nearby lake below, and the Chugach Mountain Range a few miles away.

I'll be taking some interior photos and sharing them with you over the next few months.

This is a 325,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art addition to the existing 74,000 sq. ft. facility.

Ron: I'd like to include a personal dedication, if that's possible, just a mention that Dobie and I shared a loved for Dizzy and that RCA set. How is that best handled?

Steve, I'll do my best to honor your request, and handle it personally. Please send me a PM or e-mail with the exact wording you'd like to include. Do you wish for your name to be included?

Thanks for your generosity and cool contributions, everyone!

Here's a reminder of a very nice gesture from Lois Gilbert.

"I will waive all my fees - if you order from JC clients. I can't ask them to send CDs for free since they pay a premium for all their cds. But, if you order a Jazz Corner artist's CD and mark in comments FOR DOBIE... We will charge $13 including shipping and handling. The $1 we put toward the Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund will also be waived in this case. So you're buying a new CD for $13 including shipping and handling and it will go to the Library."

In order to expedite this - please use the address information in Post #1 on this thread.

Help build a jazz collection for the UAA/APU Consortium Library while supporting the musicians on Jazz Corner. What a great combination.

Bluenoter, Ron, Stone,
I thought of something...

What is Stone's database?
My point is maybe he could send the file to me.
I can have a tiny simple script take the info from the file and display it in an HTML page I'll store on one of my servers.
A link to this HTML page would do the trick to display the list in another browser window.

Let me know if this solution would suit you and be of help.

EDIT: if the file is from MS-Excel, it is even simpler. We can save the list directly as an HTML file, then I upload the file on my server and anybody can see it by following a link. Like this.

Stone,

we've been exchanging PMs with Bluenoter about this this morning (my morning).
In fact, we're waiting for Ron to come back to us on this matter.

So far, we've concluded that whatever the format, we'll be able to find a solution to display it as HTML, for as long as information exists somewhere, it can be converted to almost anything.

I think we can discuss the details all together later via email or PM.

This is really a beautiful idea, and I'm putting together some thoughts on what I'd like to contribute. But just to clarify, does the library currently have no jazz? Like so as long as it's not the growing list, I can feel safe in buying it and not duplicating anything?

Just curious, thanks.

chuckyd4-

That's essentially true. They have a sizeable classical collection, but the jazz collection is virtually non-existent.

Yes, as long as you don't see the same title on our running list on JC, you can assume that it's not currently in the collection. What we're contributing here will be the foundation for the university's jazz collection, which I think is very cool. Dobie would be thrilled with this passion and interest.

Thanks!

Jaka, thanks very much for your generous, helpful offer. While I was sleeping last night, nice folks were helping out with this effort. Coolio.

Here's my first of several contributions to the new jazz collection. Of course, some Jim Pepper will find it's way in there, too.

Patti and I just got home from shopping and running errands, so (naturally) I checked this thread.

I'm overwhelmed but not at all surprised by the generous response of Jazz Corner posters. Unlike me, Fred K and Pete C were among the few JC members who had the good fortune to meet Dobie.

I should have some pretty cool photographs to share with everyone next week. The Dobie Losben Jazz Collection Photo Journal is about to begin.

Thanks, everyone!

Ron - can you accept promotional copies of CDs? I came across a small number in my basement today that I had been meaning to donate to the local library (as the place that sold them to me in the first place refused to buy them back...) but may as well send them off to your neck of the woods...

bostontricky-

I don't know of any reason why you shouldn't send them. I just asked my wife (who works at the library), and she agreed. They still represent a donation.

So, if you're interested in adding them to the collection, please post the artist name(s)/album title(s) on this thread so that we can add them to the database.

Thanks.

Ron: here's what's coming - I should get these off Tuesday. I'll try to do some homework this week and see if I can eke out enough money to send along a new CD or two...

Stan Kenton - Adventures in Time
Dizzy Gillespie Big Band - Night in Tunisia
Maynard Ferguson & Big Bop Nouveau - Brass Attitude
Paul Plimley & Trichy Sankaran - Ivory Ganesh Meets Doctor Drums

-and-

Ray Brown - Christmas Songs with the Ray Brown Trio
