Harry Connick, Jr.-- She
Teased by my family members that all of the singers I listen to are either dead or old (hey, what's wrong with old people? ;-)) I decided to look into a younger jazz vocalist.
The verdict on this CD:
bleh.
Why was it under "Jazz" at the library? No idea. It was just bleh. Not really bad, but just bleh.
After reading a few reviews I put his album "20" on reserve. It's supposed to be better. If it isn't I'll just go back listening to dead and old people all the time. ;-)

From seeing your other posts, I would think "SHE" is not up your alley. 20 is nicer, you should like that better,

Well, surely there are countless better younger jazz vocalists to listen to than Connick....? Even if you're just looking for stylish retro singing, John Pizzarelli's a lot better bet.

I'll toss in a suggestion for some Kurt Elling, a top JC bete noire (got yer back, Nate). I'd recommend The Messenger, because I think it's the best example of his work, esp. "Nature Boy", which knocks me out. The live record doesn't quite do it for me, and Flirting with Twilight sags a bit in spots. I don't care if the guy sings flat, or has a "faux hipster" attitude (actually, I'm not quite sure it is fake). It took seeing him live at the Green Mill -- with his standard trio -- to make a believer out of me. He's creative and entertaining.

Yes, a 2nd vote for The Messenger--it's a really fine disc. I've seen Elling twice (both very good concerts) but otherwise only have This Time It's Love, which is OK but doesn't work for me consistently.

This singer's not young and she's not old, but you should try Cassandra Wilson.

A former boyfriend of mine used to wax loudly lustful over Cassandra Wilson. It pissed me off.
(Please pardon the vulgar language, young Theo.)

I'll third it. I've always thought Elling was quite good, even though vocalists aren't usually my thing (making a big exception for Sheila Jordan and Betty Carter, who are both amazing IMO). Elling's stuff is usually pretty interesting and enjoyable.

Cassandra Wilson's singing, if that's what you want to call her boring, unartful, slurred, no diction at all crap that she spouts out is AWFUL!!!!!!!!! People I admire recommended her--maybe because they gigged with her? so I bought one of her records--YUCK!! Then one day on the radio I heard the worst, mannered, slurred piece of crap that I thought I was going to go mad and I thought it was a joke and lo and behold it was Cassandra. Yuck, double yuck!! She does have a great body though.
Bluenoter, I feel you, woman! I had this cat I was seeing who would CONSTANTLY ogle other women when we were together, talk about them and all the while *not* telling me how gorgeous I am!! Like what am I chopped liver!!!???? I don't mind too much if a cat looks at other women if he's paying ME attention too and has done the pre-requisite complimenting. But if he hasn't taken care of that business it DRIVES ME CRAZY when they go on about other women. This same cat even tried to pick up a woman when I was with him!!!! I had to let him go--needless to say. It's kindof too bad too 'cause I'm awfully fond of the cat and we were like *this* with the music. Oh well, c'est la vie!
