Many jazz greats both influenced and inspired by JC have covered his work. Two that come to mind are Tommy Flanagan's version of Giant Steps and Joe Lovano's rendition of Central Park West. There are many more. Does anyone have favorites?

McCoy Tyner's various tributes, solo and trio--Echoes of a Friend, Remembering John, and some Trane material on the Blue Note solo sessions.

Rhaasaan Roland Kirk and Lee Konitz both do interesting covers of "Giant Steps."

McLaughlin does a kickin' version of Giant Steps on his tune "Do You Hear The Voices You Left Behind?". Not exactly a cover, but definitely a tribute. Also, his "After The Rain" with Joey DeFrancesco and Elvin Jones really swings.

Kurt Elling is going to have an interesting vocalese interpretation of Resolution (I think that's the title - second track on A Love Supreme) on his next album. He performed it in Toronto. I really liked it, but I think Kurt is the wasp's nipples.

I really like the "Lonnie's Lament" from Kenny Garrett's "Pursuance."
One very cool take is one many may not have heard, John Clark's large ensemble take on "India" from his Postcards CD "I Will." Very groovy (and I can't imagine much else Trane being done with French horn).

"gotta check out David Murray, Hopkins, Tyner, & Jones."
the duet of In A Sentimental Mood between Murray and Tyner is worth the price of admission alone.

I have long been partial to Jack DeJohnette's twenty-year-old (is that possible?) take on "Central Park West" on "Special Edition," w/David Murray, Arthur Blythe, and Peter Warren. For me, it's the only version, besides 'Trane's, that actually seems to evoke the place for which it is named. When I'm in NY, I cannot go near Central Park West without hearing Murray's and Blythe's horns mesh above Warren's cello. ("CPW" is also followed, on the album, by a none-too-shabby "India," but then, I've never been there.)

and when Murray does Coltrane tunes, it's usually great.

On Ray Brown's Some of my Best Friends are Piano Players, check out Italian pianist Dado Moroni's Erroll Garner-inspired version of Giant Steps (not to mention his playing on My Romance) - I think he steals the disc!!

Jaki Byard has a great, tongue-in-cheek stride version of Giant Steps on Here's Jaki (Ron Carter, Roy Haynes).

The great tenor-altoist Andrew N. White III recorded some searing takes of Moment's Notice on his Andrew's Music label in the 70's - his album Passion Flower is a series of Coltrane-like heads with inspiring playing.

Dave Liebman has done numerous tributes to John Coltrane and one of my favorites is his rendition of "After The Rain', a soprano and piano duet with Richie Beirach on a live album,
'Live, Under The Sky Concert' (Tokyo) with Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette and Eddie Gomez.

Other songs covered by the group were, 'Naima' and 'Mr. P.C.'. A wonderful tribute album!

Pharoah Sanders - 'The Promise' on "A Tribute to John Coltran" with McCoy, Cecil McBee and Roy Haynes

Those who have heard Tete and Tommy's interpretations of "Giant Steps": Compare it to Dave Kikoski/Essiet Essiet/Al Foster on their trio recording for Epicure. Anyway, it's a good CD.

Karin Krog's interpretation of "A Love Supreme" is amazing. It's a duo with organist Nils Lindberg , from a compilation of duos with Red Mitchell, Bengt Hallberg and Nils Lindberg called "One on One"

There is a nice version of "Equinox" by Teddy Edwards & Houston Person on the CD "Horn To Horn". The rhythm section is Richard Wyands, Peter Washington & Kenny Washington. BTW this CD is being reissue this month on 32 Jazz. Mine is on Muse.

I like Pharaoh Sander's version of Equinox on Lord let me do No Wrong, even if it is a bit too eighties. . . .And I love the orchestrated version of Naima on Listen to Art Farmer and the Orchestra.

Agree with the John Clark version of "India" -- the orchestration sounds like some of the charts on AFRICA/BRASS. High praise indeed...

Love to see someone cover "Harmonique"
