Dear Jazzers,

A friend of mine is trying to get some transcriptions of instrumental solos published.

Some publishers have expressed interest in his work, but tell him he needs to determine all the parties who have a legal claim to the music and get clearances from them before they would do it.

I thought that's what lawyers were for...

Has anyone had any luck getting transcriptions published? Are there lawyers who could help?

Thank you very much in advance!

you might check with the staff at Jazz Improv magazine ( usual tri w's/ dot /jazz improv...etc .. you know the deal) and see how they handle the situation since they do so much of this sort of thing.

The advive you've gotten so far is correct, but the JI guys may be able to give you another approach to take.
