Jazz colleagues,
We received this appeal from Janeal Arison, Herbie Mann's wife. Herbie took a bad turn in his health last month while in the Bahamas. He came home to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is now at home after a hospital stay. As you
know,Herbie has prostate cancer, and one of the greatest gifts you could givehim is to ensure that you and your loved ones get tested for prostate cancer. Early detection is crucial.

we don't know what will come of the interview but we are doing because it is something we can do now for Herbie. I will be presenting the questions and it occured to me that you could be a good source for questions that you and
others might like to know about his life and career - so, any offerings wouldbe great - thanks and love to you each - Janeal & Herbie

If you would like to post questions here, I will ensure that they get to Janeal and Herbie

I'd love to hear Herbie talk about the "Memphis Underground" recording: how it came to be, especially the decision to bring in Coryell and Sharrock.

Tell us about Herbie's thoughts per the session w/Sassy and Brownie!

Then there was "Push Push," which had Duane Allman and Cornell Dupree - Herbie must have had a thing for guitarists!

I was just playing "Comin' Home" this past weekend with new colleagues, one of the first Herbie tunes I learned.

I'm saddened to learn of Herbie's health problems, but optimistic.

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a wonderful place with great healing properties, so let's hope that Herbie is not only embraced by wonderful people, but also by that which could bring about positive change.

All the best to Janeal and Herbie.

I was happy to get to hear Herbie with Nancy Wilson in November '01 at the Manchester Craftsman's Guild. It was a pleasant surprise to the whole event.

I'll be sending him peace, love and healing... Santa Fe is a good place for all that...

A question or two about the Vortex label would be appreciated - whose idea was it, how it was ran, etc.

Also, please thank Herbie for having Sonny Sharrock & Fathead Newman in the same band. Brilliant (as have been many of his assemblages over the years. The guy DOES know how to put a band together).

I heard the HOLD ON I'M COMIN' live album at the Texas State Fair whilst still a teenager, playing in a Quadrophonic demo tent. When nobody was looking, somebody cranked it up full blast just in time for a Sonny solo. People reacted.

THAT'S what State Fairs are for - corn dogs and Sonny Sharrock. You think they'd play BLACK WOMAN at the Texas State Fair? No way. But they WOULD play Herbie Mann. And Sonny Sharrock got heard.

Best wishes and sincerest, deepest thanks to Herbie Mann for not being afraid.

I beat it and I'm sure Herbie will too. It is so important to have your prostate checked at least once a year if you are over 50. Having a PSA test saved my life.

I'd like to hear Herbie's reminiscences of those great sessions he produced for Embryo & Vortex.

"What was the People's Choice flute hero doing dealing with the fringe-hugging Sharrock? Mann notes, "people always said to me 'what are you doing with this guitar player? What does he have to do with 'Coming Home Baby.' I would say, 'well, obviously, you don't know me, because if you knew me, you'd know that people who are individuals and who are unique are more important than anything else, because there are very few of them. It's just going to make my music more interesting.' They'd say 'well, that's not music. That's not jazz.' I'd say 'well, define music. Define jazz.'" "

Please convey that at least one couple (my wife and me) fell deeply in love listening to BrazilJazz, both live and at home.

It's amazing how people are missing the point of this thread. It's not about music.

Mike, I thought the point was to get questions about Herbie's life and career. I assume that's why the ? immediately above.

I've sent them on to the folks at JazzIn in New Mexico. Here's hoping that this is the first of many new interviews Herbie will be doing

I was never much of a fan of Herbie Mann until one night when I heard him at Pier 6 on the Baltimore waterfront and he took a solo on "Makin' Whoopie." The crown for best flute solo I ever heard in my life was retired at that moment.

It's too bad more young reed players don't play flute any more, they all used to double on flute in the old days.

Best wishes to Mr. Mann for a full recovery.

"they all used to double on flute in the old days."

I think that's an overstatement, but by the late-60s soprano became *the* doubling priority for reed players.
