Sorry, whoever you are, I was so eager to be helpful that I missed my "M" key! Kinda like Nusicians..sounds more contemporary, doesb't it?

Thanks, Chris.

I was reading about Paul Bley's early 60's trio of Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca. I've heard several sources wonder why they never got more attention. The penguin guys say this group was just as good as the Bill Evans trio (w/ LaFaro and Motian). I've never heard the Bley trio, but now I want to. Other musicians that come to mind:

Herbie Nichols
Ike Day (Andrew Hill raved about this guy)

Who are other musicians that have fell through the cracks? And why does this happen?

Some bassists:

Ronnie Boykins
Sirone (Norris Jones)
Bill Lee (Spike's dad)
Brian Smith

And, despite their relative "fame", I don't think that either Malachi Favors or Johnny Dyani have ever really gotten their due from the jazz community at large.

How about saying a little more about why you think these musicians deserve more attention and why they didn't receive it?

I never understood the Herbie Nichols thing. Monk wasn't exactly respected for a long time. Then again, maybe it's because Herbie didn't associate with the right musicians. But then again, why didn't he? Did the other musicians not like him?

Following up on Olewnick: Johnny Dyani died way before his time, at a time when he was just in such demand...what a tragedy. Malachi is not flashy and does not bring attention to himself, ever. But, by God, he is fabulous. Alvin Fielder and I are about to put out our New Southern Quintet CD with Malachi, Andrew Lamb, and Tim Green...Malachi is so fuckin' subtle, he kicks your ass all the way through and you don't even feel it!
